               Study trip to Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant - 19-22 May 2004, Sofia and Kozloduy


The study trip was organized under the Calendar of activities of the South East European Network for the Professionalization of the Media (SEENPM).
The study trip was expected to provide the participants with deeper insight into the intricacy of Kozloduy NPP issue. It had a fact-finding mission, and was organized in three stages: a) meetings with representatives of different institutions and organizations concerned with the NPP; b) a visit to Kozloduy NPP site; c) a round table discussion. The meetings with experts, policy-makers, NGO activists were expected to give an idea of the different approaches to the matter while the visit to the plant – a “see-it-yourself” activity – to help overcome the existing, and avoid further, speculations about the condition of the plant itself.
Participants were journalists from 8 Balkan countries - Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Hungary, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia and Monte Negro, Slovenia and Bulgaria.

 

 

        Summer Camp for Young Journalists - 17-23 May 2004, Kikinda, Serbia and Montenegro

The camp was a joint program of ACCESS-Sofia Foundation, Bulgaria and Novi Sad School of Journalism, Serbia and Montenegro under CARDS Regional Democratic
Stabilisation Programme.

The participants were 6 Bulgarian students of journalism and 30 Serbian students. The summer camp included concentrated theoretical and practical lectures, discussions and workshops. It took place in a local community in Vojvodina in order to provide students with a site-located case study and a possibility

of a grass roots project based on conversation with ‘real                           people’ and their issues.
Lecturers, workshop trainers and mentors were experts in the area of civil society in the process of transition, language strategies in communication and community actions, as well as distinguished journalists, cameramen, directors, technicians. Representatives of local NGOs working on human rights, minority rights and functioning of local community were also invited.
The Program was implemented thanks to the financial assistance of the European Union.


                The book Media Landscape of South East Europe was issued - end of May

 

This book was published under the Media Landscapes Project, implemented by ACCESS-Sofia Foundation within the South East European Network for Professionalization of the Media (SEENPM) and funded by the FRESTA Programme of the Royal Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The book presents the results of a survey conducted in 2003 by ACCESS-Sofia Foundation, Bulgaria, in eleven countries in South East Europe: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, and Slovenia.
The methodology of the survey was developed by ACCESS-Sofia Foundation. The relevant survey instruments were also elaborated by ACCESS-Sofia, with the kind assistance of Poul Erik Nielsen, Aarhus University, Danish School of Journalism.

      Reporting Defence and Security (Topical Course for Journalists) - 16-21 February 2004, Sofia

 

The Reporting Defence and Security Topical Course was held in Sofia from 16 to 21 February 2004. The course was organized by ACCESS-Sofia Foundation under the calendar of activities of the South East European Network for the Professionalization of the Media (SEENPM).
The program of the course combined both theoretical sessions and discussions.
The topical areas were: 1. Defense and Security Issues in the Media, 2. Defense Issues Reporting and 3. Security Issues Reporting.
ACCESS gave a warm welcome to participants from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia and Bulgaria.

The trainers were experienced Bulgarian journalists, media experts and experts from NGOs working in the field of defence and security issues – Mr. Velizar Shalamanov, Director Strategic Studies at the Atlantic Club of Bulgaria; Mr. Boyko Vassilev, journalist at the Bulgarian National Television; Mr. Kaloyan Pargov and Mrs. Nellie Ivanova, Program Coordinators of the “Social Adaptation and Economic Re-Integration of Redundant Military Servicemen into the Civil Society” Program, Resource Center Foundation; Mr. Valery Ratchev, Dean of National Security and Defence Faculty; Mr. Lyubomir Ivanov, President of the Atlantic Club of Bulgaria; Mr. Georgi Apostolov, Media Expert, Applied Research and Communication Fund.
