This book is an attempt of a panel of historians and sociologists to track out the “left and right” debate in a historic perspective of five years. It includes the “left and right” Round Table that took place in 1991, analyses of the political parties’ election programmes of 1991 and 1994 elections and fragments of articles on the political debate from that period.

The authors follow the political pendulum on its way from “the left” to “the right”, and vice versa, in the post-communist countries such as Lithuania, Poland, Hungary and Bulgaria. Their intentions are not to make assessments of what is right and what is not five years after the fall of the communist regimes, but to present the facts and comment on them. Their various views give a comprehensive impression of the political panorama in the post-communist countries.
