The book presents a collection of studies on the ethno-cultural situation in Bulgaria after 1990. It is a momentary picture, an addition or revised view on how relations between the ethnic minorities and the ethnic majority in Bulgaria have changed in ten years.

All articles in the book try to explain the “Bulgarian model” that solves ethnic problems, not by political analyses, but by anthropological and cultural surveys. More than thirty authors – historians, ethnographers, economists, sociologists – present the development and the problems of the ethnic groups in Bulgaria, their history, customs, every-day life.

The edition studies the image of Bulgaria as “an island of stability” on the Balkans – an image that has been built for the last ten years while our neighbours were solving religious or ethnic conflicts.

In 2000 ACCESS published the book Aspects of the Ethno-Cultural Situation in Bulgaria – Eight Years Later. As a follow up of the book of 1994 it presents a “second reading” of the realities.
